The Flathead Electric Cooperative plans to begin drilling a geothermal well next month to see if they can find water hot enough to generate electricity for the co-op's customers.
FEC director of energy Cheryl Talley says preparation of the site near Hot Springs is under way and drilling is scheduled to start on Dec. 12. They need to find water that's 165 degrees to be able to generate power.
Flathead Electric has been exploring renewable energy options since learning the Bonneville Power Administration is capping the amount of power it sells at lower wholesale prices.
In June 2009, the co-op began operating a power plant at the Flathead County landfill that converts methane into usable energy.
