BPM, Inc., a paper mill based in Peshtigo, Wisconsin, has continued to produce the same copy paper, envelope paper and confectionery wrap as its predecessor Badger Mill Paper, Inc., but the company has instituted a different business strategy that focuses on fewer products and larger profits, the Green Bay Press Gazette reported on Nov. 6.
BPM specializes in 100% post-consumer paper, which larger companies “don't want to do it because they don't want to add pulping facilities," according to General Manager James Koronkiewicz.
The company purchases recycled stock supplied by Fibrek Inc. in the form of pulp sheets, which are 90% dehydrated and cost less to transport. The sheets are then re-pulped at the Peshtigo mill.
BPM has also been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, the Sustainable Forest Initiative, the U. S. Department of Energy’s Save Energy Now Program and Focus on Energy, according to Rebecca Schoenebeck, the company’s marketing coordinator.
Although BPM continues to produce the commodity–type products previously supplied by Badger Mill Paper, it focuses mainly on specialty products. In contrast to Badger Mill Paper, BPM is privately owned and its workforce consists of 125 nonunion employees.
BPM comprises a printing plant in Oconto Falls, Wisconsin, and a paper mill in Peshtigo, which has two paper machines in addition to converting equipment. Since 2006, BPM has invested more than US$3 million into its operations, including upgrading its paper machines and computer control systems and purchasing a new boiler, the Gazette reported.
BPM is owned by James Azzar, who purchased Badger Paper Mill’s assets in 2005, after the company had gone bankrupt and entered into a receivership.
