California's rice production expected to climb 11% year-over-year to 49.4 million cwt. in 2011, USDA says; sugar beet output to rise 7% to 1.08 million tons

SACRAMENTO, California , November 9, 2011 (press release) – The USDA-NASS, California Field Office today released the crop production forecast for November. The latest survey, which was conducted during the last week of October and the first week of November, included the following commodities:

Corn - Corn for grain production is expected to total 798 thousand tons, down 19 percent from last year. Harvested acreage of 150 thousand is down 17 percent, and the yield forecast of 5.32 tons per acre is down 3 percent from the previous year.

Cotton - Upland cotton is forecast at 540 thousand bales, down 4 percent from last month’s forecast, but up 42 percent from last year. With harvested acreage of 181 thousand, the resulting yield is 1,432 pounds per acre. As of November 1st, cotton harvest was over half complete.

Rice - All rice production in California is forecast at 49.4 million cwt. for 2011, up 11 percent from the previous year. The yield forecast is 8,400 pounds per acre, and the harvested acreage is estimated at 588 thousand. Harvest began during the middle of September and is ongoing.

Sugar Beets - California sugar beet production is forecast at 1.08 million tons, up 7 percent from the 2010 crop. Harvested acreage is estimated at 25.1 thousand, and the yield forecast is 43.0 tons per acre.

Production forecasts are released on a monthly basis and do not reflect final production estimates. Late fall harvests may change these forecasts. The next production forecast will be issued December 9, 2011.
