Contra Costa County health officials are advising residents near the Concord Naval Weapons Station to stay indoors because of a stench caused by crude oil leaked from a ruptured pipeline.
The strong sulfur odor lingered in the air Tuesday morning from the leak in the 16-inch underground pipe.
ConocoPhillips Co. owns the pipeline and a nearby refinery in the suburbs east of San Francisco. The company first reported the 25-foot by 25-foot spill along the pipeline just before 5 p.m. Monday.
Workers capped the leak and began cleaning up the crude, but officials warned the smell could linger.
The company has not yet issued an estimate of how much oil leaked in the spill.
