LOS ANGELES , November 4, 2011 () – School administrators in Florida’s Leon County are introducing new wellness programs to help kids fight obesity, WCTV reported Nov. 2.

Sheila Costigan, Executive Director of the Foundation for Leon County schools, said a third of the county’s student population is at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes because they are obese.

So Leon County Schools now have fully functioning kitchens where more fresh ingredients can be used. Cathy Reed, Director of Nutrition Services for Leon Schools, said more of the schools will have more fresh fruits and vegetables, items with less sodium, and food products with more whole grains.
