Georgia-Pacific closed its stud mill in Monticello, Georgia, on Monday, affecting about 50 employees, 13WMAZ News reported on Nov. 1.
Spokeswoman Melody Ruse said GP had closed a plywood mill at the site last September due to falling demand. Commenting on Monday's closure, Ruse said GP's business is directly related to the housing industry , adding: "When you compare the 500,000 or so homes built this year to the 2.5 million built in 2005, you have to make some tough choices."
The company's MDF plant at the site will continue to operate, said Ruse. No plans have been made on what to do with the vacant mills, but Ruse said the company is in negotiations.
