LONDON , November 1, 2011 (press release) – Rexam, a leading global consumer packaging company, welcomed Mary Creagh, Labour MP and Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, to its beverage can manufacturing plant in Wakefield.

On her tour, the Shadow Secretary was given an introduction to the everyday processes of manufacturing, as well as an insight into the life cycle of Rexam’s 100%, infinitely recyclable aluminium cans.

Rexam works continuously to develop its environmental performance, focusing on objectives which include reducing the consumption of resources. Over the past year the Wakefield plant has reduced its gas consumption by 25% and electricity consumption by 30%. Rexam also maintains an awareness of advances in technology that can help to reduce their environmental impact.

Michael Waite, Wakefield plant manager, commented on the visit: “It’s always great to have the opportunity to welcome an MP to the plant and show off our can making process. Alongside this, a lot of hard work goes into reducing our environmental impact so we were especially pleased to be able to show Mary the steps we are taking to monitor and improve the plant’s environmental performance.”

Mary Creagh MP said of her visit: “I was delighted to visit an innovative manufacturing business, especially as Rexam is based in Wakefield. The Government should be supporting businesses to improve their efficiency both to help the bottom line and reduce their environmental impact. It was good to see the progress that Rexam has made in reducing their energy consumption and reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.”
