California's cattle, calves on feed for slaughter in feedlots up 10% year-over-year to 490,000 head in October, USDA says; milk production up 1% to 3.31 billion lbs. in September

SACRAMENTO, California , October 31, 2011 (press release) – CALIFORNIA CATTLE ON FEED

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter in California feedlots totaled 490 thousand head on October 1, 2011, 3 percent above last month, and 10 percent above October 2010. During September, placements of 70.0 thousand head were 27 percent above the previous year. Marketings of 49.0 thousand head were 14 percent above September 2010. Other disappearance totaled 6.0 thousand head.


UNITED STATES CATTLE ON FEED UP 5 PERCENT

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.3 million head on October 1, 2011. The inventory was 5 percent above October 1, 2010. This is the second highest October 1 inventory since the series began in 1996. The inventory included 6.95 million steers and steer calves, up 5 percent from the previous year. This group accounted for 61 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 4.32 million head, up 5 percent from 2010.

Placements in feedlots during September totaled 2.47 million, slightly above 2010. Net placements were 2.40 million head. During September, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 685 thousand, 600-699 pounds were 415 thousand, 700-799 pounds were 504 thousand, and 800 pounds and greater were 865 thousand.

Marketings of fed cattle during September totaled 1.81 million, 1 percent above 2010.

Other disappearance totaled 74.0 thousand during September, 37 percent above 2010.


CALIFORNIA MILK PRODUCTION

California milk producers produced 3.31 billion pounds of milk in September 2011. This was 5 percent below August 2011 and 1 percent above September 2010.

Monthly milk per cow averaged 1,865 pounds, 105 pounds less than in August 2011, and 15 pounds less than a year ago.


UNITED STATES HOG INVENTORY UP 1 PERCENT

United States inventory of all hogs and pigs on September 1, 2011 was 66.6 million head. This was up 1 percent from September 1, 2010, and up 3 percent from June 1, 2011.

Breeding inventory, at 5.81 million head, was up 1 percent from last year, and up slightly from the previous quarter. Market hog inventory, at 60.8 million head, was up 1 percent from last year, and up 3 percent from last quarter.

The June-August 2011 pig crop, at 29.1 million head, was up 1 percent from 2010 and up 1 percent from 2009. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 2.90 million head, down 1 percent from 2010 and down 2 percent from 2009. The sows farrowed during this quarter represented 50 percent of the breeding herd. The average pigs saved per litter was a record high 10.0 for the June-August 2011 period, compared to 9.81 last year. Pigs saved per litter by size of operation ranged from 7.50 for operations with 1-99 hogs and pigs to 10.1 for operations with more than 5,000 hogs and pigs.

CALIFORNIA COMMERCIAL SLAUGHTER

California’s production of red meat during September 2011 totaled 142.2 million pounds (dressed weight), 5 percent below the previous month, and 2 percent below September 2010. This figure includes slaughter in Federally-inspected and State-inspected plants, but excludes slaughter done on farms. In September 2011, the average live weight of cattle slaughtered was 1,264 pounds; calves 102 pounds and hogs 238 pounds, and sheep and lambs 139 pounds.


LAMB AND MUTTON PRODUCTION AT RECORD LOW FOR SEPTEMBER

Commercial red meat production for the United States totaled 4.19 billion pounds in September, up 1 percent from the 4.16 billion pounds produced in September 2010.

Beef production, at 2.22 billion pounds, was 2 percent below the previous year. Cattle slaughter totaled 2.88 million head, down 1 percent from September 2010. The average live weight was down 11 pounds from the previous year, at 1,278 pounds.

Veal production totaled 10.7 million pounds, 5 percent below September a year ago. Calf slaughter totaled 73.8 thousand head, up 4 percent from September 2010. The average live weight was down 22 pounds from last year, at 252 pounds.

Pork production totaled 1.95 billion pounds, up 4 percent from the previous year. Hog slaughter totaled 9.69 million head, up 4 percent from September 2010. The average live weight was unchanged from the previous year, at 270 pounds.

Lamb and mutton production, at 11.8 million pounds, was down 10 percent from September 2010. Sheep slaughter totaled 177 thousand head, 14 percent below last year. The average live weight was 134 pounds, up 5 pounds from September a year ago.

January to September 2011 commercial red meat production was 36.5 billion pounds, up 1 percent from 2010. Accumulated beef production was up 1 percent from last year, veal was down 3 percent, pork was up 2 percent from last year, and lamb and mutton production was down 8 percent.

September 2010 contained 22 weekdays (including 1 holiday) and 4 Saturdays. September 2011 contained 22 weekdays (including 1 holiday) and 4 Saturdays.
