Los Angeles , October 31, 2011 () – More and more consumers are side stepping brick-and-mortar stores, as smartphone use shapes shopping behavior, Internet Retailer reported Oct. 26.

Over half of shoppers -- 58% -- in a recent survey by Retrevo.com admitted to visiting stores to see electronic products in person yet buying them elsewhere online. The study looked at U.S. tech industry patterns.

Half of the more than 1,000 smartphone shoppers who participated in the study said they had consulted their phones while in a store to make purchases. In turn, 42% had used their phone for price-checking, 29% to read product reviews or check descriptions, and 25% to find coupons, while in stores.

The trend is likely to rise along with the number of smartphones, which The Nielsen Co. expects to double by year’s end.
