Texas' wheat harvest down 61% year-over-year to 49.4 million bushels in September, USDA says; oat production down 50% to 2.1 million bushels, the lowest in nearly 140 years

AUSTIN, Texas , October 19, 2011 (press release) – This report contains the results from the September 2011 Agriculture Survey, which focused on wheat and oats production in Texas. The state level estimates of small grain production in this report are considered “final” for the 2011 crop year. Our thanks to all producers who responded to the September Agriculture Survey, your responses are the foundation of the estimates in this final report.

Texas wheat producers harvested 49.4 million bushels, down from 127.5 million in 2010 and down 19 percent from 2009. Statewide yield averaged 26 bushels per acre, down 8 bushels from last year, and unchanged from the August 1 forecast. Harvested acreage for grain is 1.9 million acres, down 49 percent from 2010 and down 5 percent from the August 1 forecast.

Texas oats production totaled 2.1 million bushels in 2011, down 50 percent from 2010 and down 26 percent from 2009. This is the lowest total oats production in Texas since 1872. The 2011 Texas oats yield at 35 bushels per acre is down 17 bushels per acre from the 2010 yield of 52, and is the lowest yield since 1996. Texas oats harvested acres at 60,000 are down 25 percent from 2010 and matches the 2009 level, which was the lowest harvested acreage since 1872.

Production on the Northern High Plains is forecast at 16.3 million bushels, down 73 percent from last year. Winter wheat production on the Low Plains is forecast at 7.7 million bushels, down 25.7 million bushels from last year. The Blacklands production is estimated at 19.5 million bushels, up 10.8 million from last year.

United States winter wheat production for 2011 is totaled at 1.49 billion bushels, down slightly from last month and up 1 percent from 2010. Yield averaged 46.2 bushels per acre, 0.6 bushels less than a year ago. Acreage to be harvested for grain totaled 32.3 million acres, up 2 percent from last year.
