AUSTIN, Texas , October 19, 2011 () – Valero, ConocoPhillips fined by Texas environmental agency over air quality issues

The state's environmental agency has fined two large Texas-based oil companies for air quality violations.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality said Tuesday it had approved a $591,798 fine against Valero Refining-Texas LP for an emissions event that lasted about three months in 2008. The agency also fined ConocoPhillips $141,925 for air quality violations.

The fines were among nearly $1.2 million in fines against 66 entities for violations of state environmental regulations.

About half of the fine for each refinery will go to the Texas PTA Clean School Bus Program.

Messages left with both companies weren't immediately returned.
