The specialty grocery store chain Trader Joe's plans to open its first store in upstate New York, and it's going to be located in Wegmans' backyard.
Executives with the Wilmorite development company tell Rochester media outlets that California-based Trader Joe's will build a store at a shopping plaza in suburban Pittsford. Construction is expected to begin in January, with the store scheduled to open by the fall of 2012.
The store's location will be just a few hundred yards from one of Rochester-based Wegmans' supermarkets. Wegmans operates 79 stores in six states, including 47 in New York.
Trader Joe's says 80 percent of its products are private-label foods shoppers can't find anywhere else.
The company has more than 350 stores in 30 states, including 16 in the New York City area.
