Sonoco Products Co. plans to shut down its thermoformed plastic food trays plant in Cambridge, Ontario, by the summer of 2012, Plastics News reported Oct. 4.
The decision to close the Sonoco Plastics facility was prompted by less competitive market conditions in Cambridge, company spokesperson Robin Montgomery told Akron, Ohio-based Plastics News. Some 100 workers will be affected by the closure, he added.
Sonoco bought the Ontario facility in June 2010 when it acquired Pennsylvania-based Associated Packaging Technologies Inc.
Sonoco will move assets from the Cambridge facility to its other sites in Canada. The company operates two blow molding facilities in Mississauga, Ontario, reported Plastics News.
