EU Budgets Committee to provide €250M in additional funding to fruit, vegetable producers in hopes of preventing future food crises

LOS ANGELES , October 10, 2011 () – The European Union Budgets Committee has agreed to provide €250 million (US$339.8 million) in additional funding to fruit and vegetable producers in the hopes of preventing future food crises, reported Oct. 7.

The funding was given at the request of the Agriculture Committee. It will also be meant to financially compensate fruit and vegetable farmers in the event of any food safety crises.

The funding was originally approved at €175 million before an oral amendment to a draft agreement increased the fund by €75 million.
