Weyerhaeuser's Lumin plywood, manufactured in Uruguay from eucalyptus and pine, is being shipped to Europe with PEFC certification, according to a report by U.K. timber industry magazine TTJ.
The product has PEFC forest and chain of custody certification, making Weyerhaeuser the first forest owner in Uruguay to achieve certification to an internationally endorsed standard for its forest management practices, said PEFC Council secretary-general Ben Gunneberg.
Gunneberg said the certification would set an important example for other forest owners, and allow Weyerhaeuser to communicate the sustainability credentials of Lumin plywood to customers.
Weyerhaeuser recently doubled the production at the Uruguayan plant, and exports more than 50% to the European market.
