Rite Aid spent US$50,000 lobbying federal government in Q2, up from US$20,000 in Q2 2010; company did not disclose agencies lobbied, topics discussed

WASHINGTON , September 30, 2011 (press release) – Drugstore chain Rite Aid Corp. spent $50,000 on lobbying in the second quarter, more than double what it spent a year ago.

The Camp Hill, Pa., company did not disclose which agencies it lobbied or what topics it discussed. Rite Aid spent $20,000 on lobbying in the second quarter of 2010, and it spent $50,000 in the first quarter of 2011. The company disclosed its lobbying in a form filed July 19 with the House clerk's office.

Rite Aid is the third-largest U.S. drugstore chain, with about 4,700 stores. Its larger competitors, Walgreen Co. and CVS Caremark Corp., both run well over 7,000 locations. Rite Aid spends far less on lobbying than CVS and Walgreen, however, as it is working to reduce its annual losses and is carrying billions of dollars in debt.
