BALTIMORE , September 26, 2011 () – The Baltimore Sun will start charging readers for online content next month.

In a letter to readers published on Sunday, Timothy Ryan, publisher and CEO of The Baltimore Sun Media Group, announced that the newspaper will begin offering digital subscriptions to baltimoresun.com on Oct. 10 (http://bsun.md/p5gIB2). He says the website's nearly 500 million page views last year demonstrate that readers come back regularly to stay informed.

Digital subscribers will pay either $2.49 a week or $49.99 for six months for unlimited access to the website. Print subscribers will get discounted rates and an introductory rate of 99 cents will be offered for the first four weeks.

Non-subscribers will have free access to 15 pages each month.

The Sun is owned by Tribune Co., which is in bankruptcy proceedings.
