Chili’s Empresas CMPC SA may invest from US$1.5 billion to US$2 billion on an additional 1.3 million tonnes per year of pulp capacity at its Guaiba, Brazil, mill, a company spokesman said, the Dow Jones News Wires reported on Sept. 16.
The project is in early engineering stages and could expand the capacity to 1.75 million-1.8 million tonnes/year from its current 450,000 tonnes/year, according to a spokesman.
CMPC, Chile’s second-largest pulp producer, acquired the Guaiba mill from Brazil’s Fibria SA for US$1.43 billion in 2009. The company produces a total of 2.5 million tonnes/year of pulp, Dow Jones reported.
