China pulp imports slip in July by 3.6% month-over-month while jumping 15.8% year-over-year; first seven months of 2011 up 25.1% from year-ago
September 3, 2011
– Pulp imports to China in July reached 956,653 tonnes, down 3.6% from June, but they rose by 15.8% from those of July 2010, according to China Customs Bureau statistics.
This was the second straight month in which imports were below 1 million tonnes, after seven months in a row above 1 million tonnes. However, the year-to-date total of 8,106,318 tonnes is 25.1% ahead of the first seven months of 2010.
The month-over-month figures for bleached hardwood kraft pulp (BHKP), softwood unbleached kraft pulp (UKP), bleached chemi-mechanical pulp (BCTMP), and dissolving pulp were down, though BHKP and UKP had year-over-year increases. Bleached softwood kraft pulp (BSKP) had both month-over-month and year-over-year increases.
In July, China imported 469,830 tonnes of BSKP, increasing by 9.9% month-over-month and by 49.7% year-over-year. The cumulative total of 3,370,740 tonnes jumped by 53.7% from the year-ago figure.
The July imports for BHKP reached 283,305 tonnes, down 8.5% from June but up 3.0% from July 2010. The year-to-date total was 2,853,318 tonnes, for a 5.9% increase.
This was the second month running in which the BHKP total was below 400,000 tonnes, having started to decline month-over-month in February.
The July imports of Canadian BSKP, or northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp, were 190,613 tonnes, for a 3.4% decrease from June but a 70.7% increase from July 2010. The total for the first seven months of 2011 was also a big jump from the year-ago-period, up 89.3%, to 1,392,639 tonnes.
Imports of Brazilian bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp (BEKP) continued to decline month-over-month and year-over year, this time by 29.2% and by 30.6%, respectively, to 81,715 tonnes. For the year so far, they are down 11.3%, to 1,029,872 tonnes. Chinese buyers have been reducing their demand for BEKP in recent months, among other reasons to BEKP prices and to take advantage of new domestic capacity of BHKP.
In July, China imported 27,681 tonnes of unbleached softwood kraft (UKP), down by 36.3% from June but up 1.0% from July 2010. The year-to-date figure of 362,507 tonnes was up by 43.2%.
Imports in July of mechanical and semi-chemical pulp, also known as high-yield pulp or BCTMP, totalled 109,005 tonnes, for decreases of 12.0% month-over-month and of 10.1% year-over-year. The year-to-date total of 846,073 tonnes increased by 12.1%.
China imported 54,855 tonnes of dissolving pulp in July, down by 26.0% from June and by 38.3% from July 2010. From January through July, they totalled 588,497 tonnes, up 4.1% from the year-ago period.
