LOS ANGELES , August 23, 2011 () – Air cargo traffic at Memphis International Airport rose 2.1% from a year ago and rebounded from a 5.4% drop in May, The Journal of Commerce reported Aug. 23.

Cargo tonnage posted more than a 14% gain month-over-month, the Journal reported.

Memphis is the country’s biggest cargo airport and the main hub for FedEx Corp.’s Express unit, making it a strong indicator of demand in the expedited shipping sector.

In June, FedEx domestic cargo tonnage climbed 6.7% month-over-month while domestic cargo rose 2.1% year-over-year, the Journal reported, citing airport data.

The airport’s total cargo numbers for June, however, were still lower than those from March, down by 0.2% in H1 compared with H1 2010.
