Constellation Energy reports Calvert Cliffs, Ginna, Nine Mile Point nuclear power plants, reactors are safe, continue to operate at 100% following Virginia earthquake

BALTIMORE , August 23, 2011 (press release) – Constellation Energy Nuclear Group, LLC (CENG) today issued the following statement following the East Coast earthquake.

CENG’s highest priority is safety; nuclear safety, worker safety, public safety and environmental safety.

CENG and its employees are safe. For safety precautions, the Candler building in Baltimore was evacuated. Other buildings were evacuated as a safety precaution.

Our nuclear power units at Calvert Cliffs, Ginna and Nine Mile Point are safe.

A 5.9 earthquake has hit the area, centered outside of Richmond, VA. Per our emergency procedures, we have declared an "Unusual Event" at Calvert Cliffs.

An Unusual Event is the lowest of four emergency levels. Both Calvert units remain at 100 percent and are stable. CENG plants, following normal procedures in these situations are responding with increased observations, plant walk downs and instrumentation monitoring.

Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station in Scriba, NY and R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant in Ontario, N.Y. are safe; neither plant registered abnormal seismic activity on the monitoring equipment.

CENG plants, following normal procedures in these situations are responding with increased observations, plant walk downs and instrumentation monitoring.

The plants continue to operate safely at 100% power.
