SIG Combibloc to double liquid food business in U.K. over next three years, says new technology, greater acceptance by food retailers and broader versatility offer growth potential

LOS ANGELES , August 17, 2011 (Forestweb) – SIG Combibloc aims to double the size of its liquid food business in the U.K. within the next three years, the company said Aug. 15, Packaging News reported Aug. 16.

Managing director Malcolm Allum said most of SIG's business in the U.K. is from the milk and juice sector. Allum made the announcement as the company officially opened its new office in England's County Durham.

New technology, the viability of cartons as an alternative package and greater acceptance by retailers are combing to support the growth of the liquid food market over the next three years, said Allum.

Aseptic food cartons offer food manufacturers a familiar kind of packaging that allows manufacturers to experiment more easily with products, or to switch brands, reported Packaging News.

Only 35% of U.K. cartons are recycled at the curb and Allum said the company is working with the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment UK to help boost the recycling levels of cartons. The U.K. currently has no facility to recycle cartons and they are exported into Europe for recycling, said Allum.

The Linnich, Germany-based company has expanded during the last four years into products that include beans, soups and tomato sauces, sold across Europe. It continues to gain market share in those areas, said SIG Combibloc.
