Chicago Sun-Times Media exits print manufacturing center, distribution business, signs deal with rival Chicago Tribune for printing, packaging of daily editions of Sun-Times, seven other newspapers

CHICAGO , July 20, 2011 (press release) – A Chicago Tribune printing facility will soon turn out editions of its longtime newspaper rival the Chicago Sun-Times.

The Chicago Tribune Media Group announced the agreement Tuesday. The deal means that Sun-Times Media Productions has exited the print manufacturing and distribution business.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

The Sun-Times will move printing operations from its plant in the city to the Tribune's Freedom Center, which will print and package daily editions of the Sun-Times and seven of the company's suburban newspapers.

A Sun-Times spokesman says hundreds of jobs will be lost, while the Tribune will hire up to 100 people.

The Tribune's Freedom Center opened in 1982. The company has distributed some Sun-Times products since 2007.
