FORT WAYNE, Indiana , July 19, 2011 () – Navistar International Corp. is laying off some 200 contract workers from its Fort Wayne operations as part of its consolidation to a new headquarters in suburban Chicago.

Navistar spokesman Steve Schrier tells WANE-TV that workers began being told about the job cuts last week and that all should be notified by the end of this week.

Navistar last year turned down efforts by city officials to keep the company's truck design center and other functions in Fort Wayne. The company plans to wind down operations in the city over the next two to three years, leading to the loss of 1,200 to 1,400 jobs.

Schrier says the contractor layoffs are part of that transition and a plan to move some of the contracted work to Navistar employees.
