China's lumber imports reach 4.35 million m3 in Q1, up 55% from last year, Canada is largest supplier accounting for 1.41 million m3, U.S. lags Russia at 0.52 million m3

LOS ANGELES , June 10, 2011 () – Lumber imports to China in the first three months totaled 4.35 million m3, worth US$1,125.9 million, representing a volume increase of 55% and a 69.2% increase in value compared to the same period of 2010, Fordaq Network reported on June 9 .

The top five suppliers of lumber to China were:

  • Canada, which imported 1.41 million m3 worth $285.8 million; up 45.5% in volume and 116.7% in value;
  • Russia, which imported 1.19 million m3 worth $ 252.9 million; up up 61% in volume and 72% in value;
  • the U.S., which imported 0.52 million m3 worth $ 179.9 million, up 104.9% in volume and 93.5% in value;
  • Thailand, which imported 0.3 million m3 worth $107.4 million, down 2.5%  in volume but up 12.6% in value;
  • Indonesia, which imported 0.16 million m3 worth $ 46 million.
Plywood imports in the quarter totaled 44,800 m3, valued at $26.3 million. This represented a volume increase of 11% and a 20% value increase compared with Q1 last year.

Total log imports in Q1 were 9.7 million m3, valued at $1,738.7 million, up 26.8% in volume and 36.4% value compared with the same period last year.

Softwood log imports were 6.93 million m3, worth $1,006 million, representing an increase of 34.7% in volume and 62% in value from the previous year; the Fordaq Network reported on June 9, citing data from the International Tropical Timber Organization.

Hardwood log imports grew 10.5% in volume to 2.78 million m3, worth $732.5 - a value increase of 12.0%.

Of the hardwood logs imported, 2.17 million m3 were tropical, valued at $ 514.5 million. This represented a volume increase of 6.9% and an increase in value of 4.5% over 2010.
