About 40,000 homes and businesses from the Madison area to La Crosse are getting letters from the American Transmission Co. this week to let them know about a powerful transmission line it wants to build near their property.
The proposed Badger Coulee is moving into phase two with eight public meetings scheduled this month in the affected territory. The line will carry 345 kilovolts of electricity over 150 miles and cost about $425 million.
The State Journal reports ATC says the line is needed to bring less expensive power from states to the west into the Upper Midwest, as well as improve the reliability of Wisconsin's electric transmission grid.
