LOS ANGELES , April 29, 2011 () – Shanghai is planning to further grow Yangshan Deep Water Port facilities in an effort to improve the port services industry during its 12th Five-Year Plan for 2011 to 2015, the Shanghai port authority said April 26, Shanghai Daily reported April 27.

The government and port operators will attempt to integrate port resources and develop a nexus that connects inland waterways with ports to facilitate smooth movement of cargo, Shanghai Daily reported. They also plan to make port clearance and management more efficient.

Shanghai is also evaluating a plan for growing cooperation with nearby ports in the Yangtze River delta region, the Shanghai Daily reported.

Following State Council guidelines for making Shanghai a major shipping hub by 2020, Shanghai provided tax exemptions and other incentives for shipping companies registered in the Yangshan Deep Water Port region to benefit service sectors related to shipping, the Shanghai Daily reported.

Lingang New City, the area to the southeast of Shanghai where Yangshan Deep Water Port is located, the Waigaoqiao free trade zone and the Lujiazui financial hub are likely to spur Shanghai’s trade development over the next 10 to 20 years, the Shanghai Daily reported.

Last year, Shanghai surpassed Singapore to become the world’s biggest container port, and expects to handle 30 million twenty-foot equivalent units in 2011, the Shanghai Daily reported Chen Xuyuan, president of Shanghai International Port (Group) Co. saying.
