Hilex Poly Company LLC, the nation’s leading producer of recycled content plastic bags and leading recycler of plastic bags and film, announced that it has joined the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) WasteWise program. Hilex Poly joins as both a partner and an endorser of WasteWise.
“As the industry leader in recycling, we are proud of our waste reduction efforts to date and have set an ambitious goal of using 40% recycled content in our products by 2015. Our challenge has been to find additional ways to build on these efforts and accurately measure future progress. Now, with our partners at the EPA WasteWise we can set, track and recognize goals that not only improve our sustainability but our customer’s sustainability as well,” said Stan Bikulege, CEO and President of Hilex Poly.
The WasteWise program focuses on three key elements of waste reduction—recycling, buying or manufacturing recycled content products and preventing the production of waste in the first place. Organizations joining WasteWise agree to develop goals in these areas, track their results, and share their accomplishments with the program.
“Hilex Poly has already been working with retailers, communities and shoppers to promote and establish recycling programs at more than 30,000 supermarkets and retailers across the country. Together we have used the “closed loop” recycling model to help keep billions of plastic bags and millions of pounds of film out of local landfills. Becoming a WasteWise endorser means that other manufacturers can also benefit from our experiences in this area,” continued Bikulege. “As Hilex looks to the future we are committed to helping more communities and shoppers reduce both municipal and plastic bag waste by bringing their used bags, plastic film and other flexible plastics back to the store,” he concluded.
Research by EPA and others has shown that conserving materials through waste prevention and recycling saves energy and reduces pollution, including emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. In addition to the numerous environmental benefits waste prevention and recycling offer, waste reduction can improve operational efficiency and reduce waste management and purchasing costs.
Based in Hartsville, SC Hilex Poly is a leading packaging solutions company and recycler of plastic bags and film. Hilex Poly’s Bag-2-Bag recycling program was the first closed loop recycling program to introduce plastic bag recycling programs at supermarkets and retailers that also rewarded customers with high recycled content shopping bags. Hilex Poly proudly operates the world’s largest closed loop plastic bag recycling facility in North Vernon, Indiana.
