Food Delivery Apps: The Primary Chef In Many Households

LOS ANGELES , July 16, 2019 () – The other night, my wife was driving home from work when she called me and made what’s increasingly become a regular request in my house.

“Hey, can you order us some Postmates for dinner?” she asked.

Postmates, of course, is a restaurant delivery app that lets users order food from hundreds of different eateries, including from places that never offered delivery services before. Ever since our son was born, Postmates has been our household’s primary chef in our household. But even before we became parents, it wasn’t uncommon for us to whip out our smartphones and order up some food. After all, like most households, we both work full- time and thus often don’t have time to prepare a home-cooked meal.

Such This scenarios liked the one described above areis becominge the norm, according to eMarketer’s latest forecast on mobile app usage, which stated that  food delivery apps are rapidly growing in popularity. This year, according to the forecast, these apps will be used by 38 million people in the U.S.,, up 21.0% over 2018, according to the forecast.  By 2021, more than 20% of U.S., smartphone users will use a food delivery app, which eMarketer describes as a third-party mobile app whose primary function is the ordering of prepared food for delivery (e.g., Grubhub, Uber Eats, DoorDash).

By 2020, food delivery app usage will surpass 44 million people in the U.S., reaching nearly 60 million by 2023, eMarketer said.

“Companies in the food delivery app space are continuing to expand and develop new partnerships with food merchants,” said eMarketer junior forecasting analyst Nazmul Islam.  “As a result, customers can expect more options, which will drive user growth.”

MNow my house is a Postmates house, but that’s not the most popular food delivery app, according to research firm Edison Trends, which said in 2019 DoorDash has the highest share of consumer spending among U.S. food delivery apps at 27.6%. This is followed by Grubhub (including Seamless) and Uber Eats, which capture 26.7% and 25.2% of consumer spending in the U.S., respectively.

But regardless of what food delivery app you use, one thing is clear: The usage of such apps is on the rise and that’s not likely to stop anytime soon.
