Whether It's Hot Dogs Or Gnocchi, Fourth Of July Still Revolves Around Food

Fourth of July menu items are changing. It used to be that virtually all Independence Day celebrations would feature hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, chips, etc. But amid increasing health awareness and changing dietary needs, these staple items are being replaced with things like plant-based meat alternatives and pasta. My family celebration will feature gnocchi for the first time because my 9-month-old son has allergies and my wife is still nursing.
But regardless of the menu, a recent survey from the National Retail Federation confirms that food remains a key part of Independence Day celebrations. Among the survey’s findings:
---Eighty-six percent of Americans plan to celebrate the holiday and are expected to spend about $6.7 billion on food items.
---The expected spending for food this year will drop to $73.33 per person, down from $75.35 per person in 2018. Cookouts, barbecues and picnics are the most popular way to celebrate the holiday for 61% of consumers.
---About 94% of 18-to-24 years olds plan to celebrate the Fourth of July, while only 81% of those 65 and older do. Regionally, most celebrants hail from the South (88%) followed by the Midwest (87%), Northeast (85%) and West (83%).
Our Fourth of July celebrations are becoming more varied in the food we eat. But food remains the centerpiece of these celebrations. Let’s use it as a way to bring us closer together. Enlarge the table! Feature both traditional and different holiday dishes. Let’s bond over the old and new.
I, for one, will be having a side of gnocchi with my hamburger and hot dog.
