HAGERSTOWN, Md. , September 17, 2008 () – The owner of a defunct paper plant in Hagerstown has asked Maryland to renew its water discharge permit. But Cascades Tissue Group Maryland of Quebec says it does not intend to reopen the plant.

A spokesman for the plant says the company wants to keep the permit current if its plans change.

A state spokesman says Maryland usually wants a renewal application to be filed a year before it expires.

Cascades' five-year Hagerstown permit expires on August 31, 2010.
