LOS ANGELES , April 27, 2012 () – Tembec Inc. today announced that it will increase the list prices for all of its grades of high-yield pulp by US$30 per tonne in Asia and US$40/tonne in Europe, effective May 1.

The company did not specify its new price level.

High-yield pulp is also known as bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp, or BCTMP.

This is the first known May price increase announcement by a BCTMP producer. Tembec was also the first known announcer for April, when it said it was going up $30/tonne in Asia. For March 1, Tembec announced hardwood high-yield pulp increases of $35/tonne for Asia and $30/tonne for Europe.

Tembec, based in Montreal, has a production capacity of 805,000 tonnes per year of high-yield pulp, all hardwood, which it makes from aspen and maple species at three mills in Canada, including Temiscaming, Quebec (315,000 tonnes/year), Matane, Quebec (250,000 tonnes/year), and Chetwynd, British Columbia (240,000 tonnes/year).

On Feb. 24 it was reported that Tembec’s Matane mill was to be shut from March 25-31, due to a woodchip inventory shortage, and that maintenance work would also be completed during the downtime. The outage was expected to result in lost production of 5,000 tonnes.

Tembec also has a capacity of 255,000 tonnes/year of northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp, produced at its mill in Skookumchuk, British Columbia. On March 22, Tembec announced that it will increase its April list prices of NBSK in North America and Asia by $30/tonne, to $900/tonne and $730/tonne, respectively.
