Americans Not So Willing To Return To The Normal They Once Knew

How willing are Americans to get back to normal after the coronavirus lockdowns end? It’s something we all have to think about. Once restrictions are fully lifted (which can be in a short time or not for a long while, depending on what state you live in), we all have to ask ourselves: Are everyday places where people regularly congregate really safe once again? Think about it: The everyday places we go to—movie theaters, malls, gyms, retail stores, restaurants, offices, supermarkets—are all filled with people in close proximity. Before the coronavirus pandemic, that proximity was something we never thought about. It was just part of everyday life. But now? Wouldn’t we all think twice before going to any of these places? Can we truly just jump right back in? A recent survey by Statistia tried to tackle this question by asking 720 U.S. adults whether they would continue to visit certain everyday establishments once coronavirus restrictions were lifted. The following are the public venues Americans will continue to avoid after COVID-19 lockdowns: Movie Theaters: 55% Bars and clubs: 55% Concerts: 53% Sporting events: 53% Gyms: 49% Restaurants and Cafés: 46% Retail stores and Malls: 45% Museums and Galleries: 37% Hairdressers and Barber Shops: 30% Won’t Avoid Anything: 18% Supermarkets: 17% Personally? I’m not planning on visiting any of these places right away when the lockdowns are lifted. I’d want to wait at least a couple of months to make sure there’s not another outbreak. And even when I start venturing out into everyday life again, I might still pause if I feel there’s too many people at my local market. Or I still might find myself donning a mask and gloves even long after we’re told it’s OK not to do so anymore. I’m scared. I can’t help it. Everyday life is not what it used to be.
