The New York Times promotes Lauren Leatherby to senior editor for visuals in London; journalist will lead graphics coverage of Europe, Middle East and Africa while managing team of graphics reporters

February 3, 2025 (press release) –

During an extraordinary few years for international news, Lauren Leatherby’s visual reporting has stood out. She has helped to document the threat of genocide in Darfur and charted how a vast demographic shift is reshaping the world. As the anchor for graphics coverage of conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria, she has shown impressive range, delivering critical news pieces well ahead of competitors in addition to inventive and deeply reported multimedia stories on the conflicts’ human tolls.

We are thrilled to announce that Lauren will be the senior editor for visuals in London, a promotion that will make her a critical voice for how we use data and visual journalism across the International report.

Lauren will shape our visual approach to coverage of Europe, the Middle East and Africa, working closely with her counterparts in Photo and Video. She will lead a team of graphics journalists — including two talented reporters, Josh Holder and Samuel Granados — tasked with helping readers understand these regions through data reporting, visual explanations and immersive multimedia. And she’ll collaborate with correspondents and editors across the desk to devise creative approaches to our most distinctive enterprise and investigations.

Lauren brings a rare blend of strengths to the role. She is a fantastic collaborator. She combines dedicated beat reporting with nuanced analyses of difficult datasets, videos and other media. And she is a skilled designer and developer who can quickly bring stories to life in unexpected forms.

Visual coverage is proving increasingly valuable on International as visual reporting and storytelling become central to how we cover every major story line. Lauren will work closely with Dawn Cai, who has pioneered a similar role in Seoul and has helped to lift the visual ambitions of the Asia report.
