Jason takes on Madrid after an impressive tour as Rome bureau chief. For seven years, he brought nuance and depth, but also humanity and wit, to the assignment, delivering memorable stories about the Paris teenager named the heir of a defunct Italian monarchy; the exploits of Roman seagulls; and a 22-year-old searching for a cure to his rare disease and the secrets of aging. Whether it was Vladimir Putin, Silvio Berlusconi or Pope Francis, he gave readers fresh perspectives on well-covered leaders. (Who can forget the inspiration Giorgia Meloni drew from “The Lord of the Rings”?) His Covid coverage was part of the package that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2021. “Jason is a dream correspondent — a brilliant (and often hilarious) writer, a dogged reporter and a wonderful colleague. He is a superb political reporter who delivers scoops and writes with authority and insight,” said Jim Yardley, The Times’s associate managing editor for enterprise and former Europe editor. “And he can make any feature story sing. He’s just the total package.” Before joining the International desk in 2017, he was a political reporter based out of Washington. He was also the roving political features and profiles writer for The Washington Post and a staff reporter at The New York Observer. In addition to The New York Times Magazine, he has also written for The New Yorker, Vogue, Town & Country magazine and GQ. Please congratulate our colleagues, Motoko and Jason. We can barely wait for the stories they’ll tell in their new roles.
