New York Times wins two Gerald Loeb Awards for business journalism; Times team honored for Starlink investigation, Hannah Dreier recognized for child labor exposé

November 4, 2024 (press release) –

We’re delighted to announce that The Times had two award-winning entries and two other finalists in this year’s Gerald Loeb Awards for distinguished business and financial journalism.

The prize for Visual Storytelling went to a team from Business and Graphics: Adam Satariano, Scott Reinhard, Cade Metz, Sheera Frenkel and Malika Khurana for “Elon Musk’s Unmatched Power in the Stars,” which used text, intricate animations, explanatory diagrams, maps and other graphics to provide an authoritative examination of the rapid rise of Starlink satellites and the global influence that they have provided Mr. Musk.

In the International category, Hannah Dreier of Investigations was the winner for Alone and Exploited, her investigation that documented the work of migrant children in violation of labor laws in all 50 states, making products for some of the country’s best-known brands. The pieces exposed punishing circumstances, grueling hours and fatal accidents — and the willful ignorance of the U.S. government and complicity of employers.

The Times also had two finalists. Andrew Ross Sorkin’s interview with Mr. Musk at the DealBook Summit was a finalist in Video. And The Times’s coverage of the conviction of Sam Bankman-Fried, the cryptocurrency mogul, in his fraud and conspiracy trial, was a finalist in Breaking News, featuring work from David Yaffe-Bellany, Matthew Goldstein, J. Edward Moreno, David Streitfeld and Erin Griffith.

A highlight of the awards banquet was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Diana B. Henriques, whose quarter-century career at The Times was capped by her unmatched coverage of Bernard Madoff’s multibillion-dollar fraud scheme and the lives it devastated.
