Barnes & Noble opens new 25,000 sq. ft. store in Santa Fe on August 14; author Carlene O'Connor to host ribbon-cutting and book signing at 10AM

August 7, 2024 (press release) –

Author Carlene O'Connor to Host Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony and Book Signing at the Grand Opening at 10AM on Wednesday, August 14, 2024

Santa Fe, NM – August 7, 2024 – Barnes & Noble is thrilled to announce the opening of its new Santa Fe bookstore on Wednesday, August 14th.  The new Barnes & Noble is located in the Santa Fe Place Mall (4250 Cerrillos Road, Santa Fe, NM 87507) in the space formerly occupied by Bed Bath & Beyond, between Dillard’s and World Market.

The bookstore will officially open to the public at 10AM ET on Wednesday the 14th, with author Carlene O'Connor cutting the ribbon and signing copies of her books. The new store, at over 25,000 square feet, is one of the largest to have been opened by Barnes & Noble recently and showcases the highly lauded new bookstore design. The store will offer all the best books, toys, games and gifts that customers have come to expect from the nation’s premier bookseller and will include an updated B&N Café.

“Santa Fe has been without a large national bookseller since the closure of Borders back in 2011. We are delighted to have found such a prominent and expansive store in which to bring Barnes & Noble to Santa Fe,” said James Daunt, CEO, Barnes & Noble. “This will be a beautiful store in which our booksellers will be able to craft an exceptional experience. I want to thank all those who have written to me over the last 3 years with recommendations for where we might open in Santa Fe, and the warm welcome so many others have expressed since we first announced the opening of this store back in February.”

Barnes & Noble is enjoying a period of tremendous growth as the strategy to hand control of each bookstore to its local booksellers has proven so successful. The bookseller is experiencing strong sales in its existing stores and has been opening many new stores after more than 15 years of declining store numbers. In 2023, Barnes & Noble opened more new bookstores in a single year than it had in the whole decade from 2009 to 2019. The bookseller expects to open over 50 new bookstores in 2024.

The Santa Fe location is one of seven new Barnes & Noble bookstores to open in August, alongside locations in South Carolina, Kentucky, New York, California and Tennessee. Each grand opening has drawn enthusiastic crowds that wrap around the building, filling the store as the ribbon is cut.

“We could not be more excited to welcome residents of Santa Fe and the surrounding communities into our new bookstore,” said Christine Skarin, Store Manager. “So many readers, much like our booksellers, are over the moon to have such a great bookstore opening on their doorstep!”
