Simon & Schuster has been named to Forbes magazine list of “America’s Best Mid-Size Employers 2022.” In the survey, Simon & Schuster was ranked #342 out of 500 companies cited, the first time it has been selected for this prestigious list.

“We are honored and delighted to be named one of ‘America’s Best Midsize Employers’ said Jonathan Karp, President and CEO of Simon & Schuster. “The last two years have been among the most eventful in the history of our company. But through it all we have put great focus and energy into being a workplace where the ideas, opinions and contributions of our employees are recognized and valued. This atmosphere, which we continually evaluate and strive to improve upon, encourages and fosters the entrepreneurial spirit that has been an indelible part of this company’s heritage since it was founded in 1924. It is what enables us to be the best publisher that we can be for our authors, and it all starts with our employees.”

Employee-friendly initiatives at Simon & Schuster include mentoring programs, online courses for skills, management and career development, regular town hall meetings and small group sessions with the CEO, a Publishing 101 seminar series about all the major publishing disciplines, taught by company leaders, book clubs and Q&A forums with authors, and free copies of every book published by Simon & Schuster.

The company places great emphasis on being a more diverse and inclusive workplace, in the composition of its employee base, in the books it publishes, and the ways in which it finds new readers from underrepresented groups. Some of the ways in which it has moved toward this goal are the appointments of a Director of Workplace Culture and Diversity Initiatives and a Director of Multicultural Marketing; employee listening sessions conducted across the company; an 18-month rotational Associates program for early-in career talent from underrepresented groups; a year-round internship program; candidate sourcing from historically black colleges and universities; a very active employee-led Diversity and Inclusion Council; and its longstanding relationship with its New York-based Adopted High School that annually awards a student scholarship grant.

Simon & Schuster also annually awards four scholarships, in honor of its former CEO Carolyn Reidy, to students at four of the top publishing institutes in the U.S.  In 2021 it launched Publishing Prologues, an innovative new talent sourcing educational program, free to the selected participants, with the goal of attracting economically, geographically, and ethnically diverse young talent to the publishing industry.

To create the list of America’s Best Mid-Size Employers, Forbes partnered with Statista, a market research firm, to determine the companies that employees liked best. Statista surveyed 60,000 Americans that worked for companies of 1000 or more employees.

The surveys were conducted anonymously. Among the question asked of respondents was how likely they’d be to recommend their employer, and to rate their companies on factors such as working conditions, development opportunities and compensation.
