March 22, 2023 (press release) –

ICA, together with Swedish Plastic Recycling, is now launching a new circular plastic packaging for SKONA detergent that is made out of 95% recycled plastic. The plastic in the packaging consists of packaging that has been collected from Swedish households via FTI's collection system, sorted out by Swedish Plastic Recycling and finally turned into new plastic packaging.

FTI collects packaging from households all over the country via our nationwide and accessible collection system with recycling stations and curbside collection. The plastic packaging that is source separated by households and collected by FTI goes to Swedish Plastic Recycling in Motala for recycling. To reduce carbon dioxide emissions, minimize the need for new fossil plastics and create a market for circular recycled plastic raw materials, ICA, together with Swedish Plastic Recycling, is now launching a new packaging for SKONA detergent that consists of 95% recycled plastic from Swedish households.

— The new SKONA bottle paves the way for plastic packaging to now become part of the circular economy. It illustrates the ideal image of the circular system that we are trying to build, where a used plastic packaging becomes a new plastic packaging. This has been a very important project that will create a paradigm shift for plastic recycling. When we achieve circularity, we can minimize emissions from incineration and reduce the need for new plastic, says Mattias Philipsson, CEO of Swedish Plastic Recycling.

— Within ICA, we have a strong focus on minimizing the environmental impact of packaging and contributing to more circular plastic flows. Through our new SKONA bottle, we not only follow our own ambitions in increasing the use of recycled plastic, but also clearly show customers how their choice of product, and that they leave packaging for recycling, contributes to a more sustainable society and sustainable products . We think that will be very much appreciated, says Kerstin Lindvall, director of sustainability at ICA Gruppen.

The new detergent bottle will be available in stores nationwide as early as next week.

Goes ahead of expected EU legislation
To make plastic part of the circular economy, a proposal for new legislation has been presented within the EU with requirements that every plastic packaging placed on the European market must contain recycled plastic raw material from 2030. For example, plastic packaging in contact with food must contain 10% recycled plastic raw material and other plastic packaging must contain 35%. That there is high-quality recycled plastic raw material available will then become a prerequisite for producers to be able to comply with the new legislation.

— With the SKONA bottle, we are ahead of the legislation and building a circular system and a market for recycled plastic raw material in Sweden. It creates the conditions for our customers, and Sweden, to be able to reach the climate targets, says Mattias Philipsson.

During the autumn, Swedish Plastic Recycling’s new facility Site Zero will be put into operation, where new circular plastic packaging will be able to be produced from around ten types of plastic. By being affiliated to FTI, your plastic packaging gets the opportunity to be sorted for recycling at Swedish Plastic Recycling in Motala.
