April 18, 2023 (press release) –

Recent developments at Greif LATAM reinforce Greif’s global commitment to building a more sustainable future. Significantly, the development of a jerrycan made from 100 percent post-consumer resin material (PCR) and the region’s first plant to achieve zero waste to landfill.

The 100 percent PCR jerrycan is an innovation from Greif Colombia, driven by a team-wide ambition to reduce the impact of its packaging on the environment and support customers looking for a more sustainable packaging option. The jerrycan has already been well-received, particularly by customers in the lubricants and detergents industries.

Julio Gomes, Plant Coordinator, explains: “Industrial plastic packaging with part PCR material is becoming increasingly popular and available, but what makes this new jerrycan so pioneering is that it is made from 100 percent PCR and has been rigorously tested to ensure that the material performs consistently and to the similar standards as virgin plastic.

“This is a very significant development as the recirculation of plastic material not only reduces the amount going to landfills but conserves energy as it replaces the need to manufacture new plastic.

Communication and collaboration with colleagues, suppliers, and customers have been key to its success. We are very pleased to be able to offer this product to our customers, and we will continue to market and develop it to make it suitable for a wider range of industrial applications and markets.”

Meanwhile, our colleagues at Greif Araucariaare celebrating becomingthe first plant in LATAM to reach zero waste to landfill. This target has been met since November FY2023, moving Greif a step closer to its goal of achieving zero waste to landfill at 97 percent of its production facilities by 2030. This notable achievement was accomplished through a combination of learning from best practices, engagement across different business functions, collaboration with customers and suppliers, and strong data collection and analysis.

Across Greif LATAM, 11 out of its 14 facilities are diverting at least 90 percent of their waste from landfills.
