Valmet’s production unit in Finland earns ISCC PLUS certification that enables the use of bio-based raw materials in paper machine clothing

Dec 31, 2024

Valmet has received the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS for its paper machine clothing production unit in Tampere, Finland. With the certification, Valmet can introduce new bio-based raw materials in its fabrics used in pulp, board, paper, and tissue production.

Valmet is committed to innovating new ways to reduce the use of fossil resources in its products. Obtaining the ISCC PLUS certification enables the use of bio-based raw materials in paper machine clothing with mass balance approach.

“Reducing the carbon footprint of paper machine clothing is a long journey, and for us the ISCC PLUS certification means the beginning of that journey. It is one step forward towards our ultimate climate goals and we are very proud to have taken that step,” says Mika Lahtinen, Director, Research and Development, Fabrics at Valmet.

The first product group where the mass balance approach will be used is press felts.

“Press felts play a crucial role in our customers’ processes. They are exposed to extreme conditions in pulp, board, paper, and tissue production, and our first priority is to offer high-performing products with long lifetime. The ISCC-certified mass balance approach enables the use of bio-based raw materials without compromising the product quality, and we are looking forward to launching the first press felts with lower carbon footprint soon,” adds Leena Silakoski, Senior Manager, Press felts and Belts at Valmet.

The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is an independent multi-stakeholder initiative and leading certification system supporting sustainable, fully traceable supply chains.
