February 10, 2025 (press release) –

We are very happy to share that Jason Stallman is returning to the newsroom to join National as senior story editor.

Jason has long established himself as one of the most inventive editors around. When people learn they are getting to work with him, it’s not just reporters who get excited but photo editors, graphics colleagues and more. Jason is an editor who isn’t bound by what’s been done before, and we need as much of that spirit as we can get.

Jason has been on National before. After starting at The Times in 2003 as a copy editor in Sports, he joined the desk in 2010 as news editor. The desk had its share of disasters and big news to cover then — the BP oil spill in the Gulf and the Gabby Giffords shooting in Tucson, to name just two. Jason also edited the New England reporters (including a terrific reporter named Abby Goodnough).

He had a singular run as Sports editor from 2013-18, overseeing investigations that exposed the concussion crisis in football, corruption in FIFA and the groundbreaking “Snow Fall” project — work that won a Pulitzer Prizes. Later, he became executive producer of The Times’s documentary unit, winning seven Emmys and co-producing the powerful “Framing Britney Spears.” Most recently, since 2024, he has been editor at large at The Athletic.

Sarah Lyall, who has worked with Jason, says this: “Jason is a dream of an editor: imaginative, innovative, supportive, humorous, fearless and just a little bit subversive. He encourages you to dig deeper, think bigger and write better — and he’s always on your side, even when he makes you repeatedly rewrite your lede on deadline. (Alas, he’s also nearly always right.)”

Please join us in welcoming Jason.
