Let's delve into the key areas of focus for The Navigator Company during this period.

Energy Transition and Sustainability Initiatives

The Navigator Company demonstrated a strong commitment to energy transition and sustainability across its industrial sites. On Portugal's National Energy Day, the company highlighted three major projects set to launch in 2025, aimed at reducing electricity purchases and increasing renewable energy usage:

  • A new Tissue steam turbine in Aveiro, projected to produce 60.5 GWh annually
  • A new Paper steam turbine in Figueira da Foz, with an expected output of 21.9 GWh per year
  • A Tissue photovoltaic power plant in Vila Velha de Ródão, anticipated to generate 14.1 GWh annually

These projects are expected to reduce the company's electricity purchases by 96.5 GWh and avoid over 15,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions (scope 2). The Navigator Company also highlighted that in 2024, 78% of its electricity production and 80% of its primary energy consumption came from renewable sources. Additionally, the company's operational efficiency projects have resulted in energy savings of approximately 100 GWh per year in recent years.

Sustainable Forestry and Cork Oak Production

On Portugal's National Cork Oak and Cork Day, The Navigator Company highlighted its role as one of the largest private cork oak producers in Portugal. The company emphasized the importance of cork oak forests, which represent 22.3% of Portugal's woodland area. Portugal is home to 34% of the world's cork oak ecosystem and is responsible for 45.6% of global cork production, leading the sector worldwide.

The Navigator Company also showcased its commitment to sustainable forest management, particularly in the production of Eucalyptus globulus, which serves as the raw material for their gKRAFT packaging paper. The company claims to produce up to seven times more square meters of packaging paper per hectare of forest compared to solutions made from Nordic pine, while maintaining responsible forest management practices.
