Swedish packaging firm Returpack has achieved 100% fossil-free deposit packaging transport and is now aiming for completely emission-free transport. The firm has been investing in electric and hydrogen vehicles for several years. It has invested in an electric HCT vehicle with
Alfredsson Transport
in Norrköping. The vehicle has been operating a route between the firm's plant in Norrköping and southern
Stockholm
since the end of 2024. The vehicle reduces emissions and increases volume per transport. Returpack's transport-related emissions have declined by 97.7% for compactor vehicles and 89% for long-haul transport since 2015. The development has been driven by a long-term strategy, where fossil-freeness was included as a requirement in procurement from 2014 and long-term agreements were signed with carriers to enable investment in new technology. Returpack's Logistics Manager
Marie Skoog
explained that the transports have a major impact on the environmental impact of the deposit system. The firm is now focusing on a transport system that does not contribute to climate emissions. It will focus on investments in new technology and close cooperation with carriers. The goal for 2025 is to have at least 5% of collection transports performed by hydrogen or electric vehicles.
