May 8, 2025 (ENP Newswire) –

Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC; Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Manabu Chikumoto) is pleased to announce that its multi-layer film containing SoarnoL, a gas barrier resin used in food packaging materials, and Soaresin, a recycling aid, has received recyclability certification from U.S. recyclability certification organization the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR).

SoarnoL, developed by MCC's own technology, is an ethylene-vinyl alcohol resin (EVOH) that provides high gas barrier properties, oil resistance, and clearness. When used as a food packaging material, it helps preserve the flavor and quality of food for longer, thereby contributing to reducing food waste. It can also be made thinner than other materials, thereby contributing to reducing the amount of plastic used. Demand for this environmentally friendly material is expanding worldwide.

From the perspective of resource circulation, plastic products, including food packaging materials, need to be recyclable, and progress is being made in the development of materials with excellent recyclability. We have recently received APR certification recognizing the recyclability of our polyethylene-based multi-layer film containing 15wt% of SoarnoL. This multi-layer film was also certified as recyclable when used in combination with Soaresin, which improves compatibility with other resins and the quality of recycled materials.

Furthermore, based on the recyclability certification from APR, we also received a pre-qualification letter1 from the How2Recycle labeling system.

The recyclability certification and pre-qualification letter that we have received demonstrate that Soarnol not only contributes to reducing food waste, but also to resource circulation.

In the Mitsubishi Chemical Group's management vision, KAITEKI Vision 35, we have listed 'maintaining food quality' as one of our focus business areas. We are committed to contributing to the creation of a sustainable society by providing environmentally friendly ingredients that help maintain food quality.
