The Finnish paper company, Metsä Group, is investing over SEK 4.2bn in the Metsä Tissue Future Mill in Mariestad. Construction activities have already been completed, and the installation phase is currently underway. Metsä Tissue Vice President Projects Esa Paavolainen says that while the principle of paper manufacturing remains the same, all technology is evolving and many changes in a wide range of production steps contribute to faster, more efficient and less energy-intensive production. The Mariestad mill, Katrinefors Bruk, currently produces 75,000 tonnes of paper annually for the Scandinavian market. With the new third paper machine, production capacity will almost double to about 145,000 tonnes per year.
