According to the results of the international LEX4BIO project coordinated by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), a significant part of the mineral fertilizers used in agriculture could be replaced by better utilization of nutrient-rich by-products of food production. The results show that the recycled fertilizers on the market are equally effective as mineral fertilizers and do not pose any risks to food safety or human health. Lead researcher Kari Ylivainio of Luke said that many recycled fertilizers still require further development to improve their usability. In addition, information about the safety of recycled fertilizers must be more visible to increase consumer confidence. Concentrations of organic pollutants tested in commercial recycled fertilizers were lower than the strictest limits set for them in any EU Member State.
