The perception of forests' capacity to sequester carbon has changed both in
Finland
and in
Europe
, according to
Antti Asikainen
, Research Director General at the Natural Resources Institute Finland. He stated that the latest information on forest carbon sinks in
Finland
and
Europe
forces the country to re-evaluate the role of forests in mitigating climate change.
Maija Rantamäki
, Head of International and EU Forest Affairs at
Finnish Forest Industries Federation
(Metsäteollisuus ry), questioned the view of the relationship between logging and carbon sinking, noting that the scenario on which the Climate Act was based included an assumption of an annual logging volume of over 80 million cubic metres. This would have resulted in a carbon sink of over 20 million tonnes and carbon neutrality by 2035. Rantamäki said that annual harvests have not risen to this high level, but that the carbon neutrality goal is still slipping away.
