According to the latest survey, there are 1,483 species cataloged in the company's forests in the State, which corresponds to an increase of 6.3% (88 more species) compared to the previous year

Suzano's Biodiversity Monitoring Program, a global reference for the manufacture of bioproducts developed from eucalyptus, cataloged 107 new species of fauna and flora in the company's forest areas (planted and environmentally preserved) in Mato Grosso do Sul last year . Among the identified species are small cuíca ( Cryptonanus agricolai), also known as catita, and jararaca caiçara ( Bothrops moojeni ), as well as various grasses and shrubs from the Cerrado. With the new survey, published in the 2022 Suzano Management Plan Summary, the number of species cataloged in Suzano's forest areas jumped from 1,395, in 2021, to 1,483 in 2022, which corresponds to an increase of 6.3% . Of this total, 669 species are plants and 784 are wild animals.

“This increase in the number of identified species meets the company's purpose, which is to renew life from trees, and our commitment to contributing to the conservation of biodiversity in the regions where the company operates. We are always looking for improvements in our environmental conservation processes and programs and, recently, we also included creeping species of the Cerrado flora in our monitoring. These actions aim to ensure that, thanks to our sustainable management plan, our planted forests and environmental conservation areas remain habitats for many species of our fauna”, highlights Renato Cipriano Rocha, Forest Environment coordinator at the Três Lagoas Unit.

According to the manager, the species of cuíca-pequena and jararaca-caiçara attract attention due to their lack of information and camouflage power, respectively. The small cuíca is on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) red list with insufficient data to analyze the level of threat. One of the difficulties in cataloging the small opossum is the size of this species: 82 to 89 millimeters in head and body length, reaching 100 millimeters, taking the tail into account.

The Caiçara jararaca species draws attention due to its importance for Brazilian medicine. Distributed mainly in the Central region of Brazil, the species is known for the power of its venom, but at the same time, it generates medical interest because it can be used to produce antivenom. The species is also on the list of threatened animals.

Identified species

Still according to data from the Monitoring Program, from 2007, when the program was implemented, by 2022, 784 species of wild animals had been cataloged, including 400 birds, 136 arthropods, 96 species of mammals, 59 reptiles and 53 fish.

Of this total, 32 are on the list of species threatened with extinction by the IUCN and 34 threatened by IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Natural Resources), eight plants, 20 mammals, four birds, one fish and one arthropod. Among the threatened species found in the Suzano forests in Mato Grosso do Sul are: giant anteater, maned wolf, tapir, haystack cat, mutum, giant armadillo, peccary, wild cat and little fox .

Suzano maintains a forestry base of 599,996 thousand hectares, of which 143,129 thousand hectares are dedicated exclusively to environmental conservation. The Suzano Management Plan Summary can be accessed at: https://www.suzano.com.br/a-suzano/documentos/?tag=manejo-florestal-sustentavel
