Sustainability Innovations in Footwear and Textiles

Fashion for Good highlighted groundbreaking innovations in footwear recycling, addressing the significant environmental challenge posed by the 23.8 billion pairs of shoes that end up in landfills annually. These innovations aim to tackle the complex issue of shoe recycling, given that shoes can contain up to 60+ different components.

In the textile sector, Fashion for Good celebrated the completion of the T-REX Project (Textile Recycling Excellence), an EU-funded initiative aimed at developing a harmonized system for closed-loop textile-to-textile recycling in Europe. The project, involving 13 leading organizations including Fashion for Good, has produced a comprehensive blueprint for scaling textile recycling in Europe. This blueprint is supported by key reports on Life Cycle Assessment, Technical Guidelines for Recyclable Garments, Data Model for Textile Recycling, and Citizen Engagement.

Bio-based Innovations and Certifications

A significant milestone in bio-based innovation was achieved by Fashion for Good's innovator, Nature Coatings. Their BioBlack Beauty product became the first pigment ever to receive the USDA BioPreferred certification for cosmetics. This achievement marks a pivotal moment in the shift towards bio-based, non-toxic materials in fashion and cosmetics. Nature Coatings transforms wood waste into high-performing black pigments that are direct replacements for petroleum-based carbon black pigments, manufactured in a closed-loop system with minimal environmental impact.
